Minnesota Governor Tim Walz spent decades cultivating unusually close ties to the Chinese Communist Party while his administration presided over the largest documented COVID-era fraud scheme in American history. He made more than thirty trips to mainland China, received treatment reserved for dignitaries during his first teaching stint there in 1989, allegedly removed classified artillery manuals during one visit in 1995, and later directed millions of taxpayer dollars to a Minnesota research institute whose director maintained undisclosed connections to Beijing’s Thousand Talents Program and the Wuhan Institute of Virology. During the same period his state government ignored repeated internal warnings about hundreds of millions in federal child nutrition funds disappearing into shell companies, many run by members of Minnesota’s large Somali community.
What happens when a leader opens the door to a foreign adversary for military secrets, research partnerships, and financial oversight, then stands by while billions vanish on his watch? The Hebrew Bible records precisely this pattern in the reign of King Ahaz of Judah.
“I am thy servant and thy son; come up, and save me out of the hand of the king of Aram, and out of the hand of the king of Israel, that rise up against me.” (2 Kings 16:7)
Ahaz faced threats from neighboring kings and chose to beg the Assyrian empire for rescue. He sent gold and silver from the Temple treasury as tribute, invited Assyrian forces into his territory, and surrendered control of his own affairs. Assyria arrived as the “savior” and never departed. The Sages explain that this one decision handed Judah into permanent foreign domination far more completely than the original enemies ever could have achieved. Walz’s record follows the identical trajectory.
The China Invitation No Ordinary Teacher Receives

Walz arrived in Foshan, Guangdong province, in summer 1989, months after the Tiananmen Square massacre. U.S. advisories labeled the regime hostile and strongly discouraged travel. Yet a recent college graduate with no notable credentials received a personal invitation from Communist Party officials to teach English. Local Nebraska newspapers captured the community’s surprise that one of their own had been handpicked. The Chadron Record on September 4, 1990, quoted Walz: “No matter how long I live, I’ll never be treated that well again.” He received the only air conditioner on campus, a free bicycle replaced the same day it was stolen, and more gifts than he could carry home. He earned double the local teachers’ salary and enjoyed extended paid leave that allowed 1,500-mile train trips to Beijing while his students, already fluent in English, sat in class.
By the mid-1990s Walz had visited China more than thirty times. His income as a public school teacher and National Guard sergeant major could not cover the expense. He founded Educational Travel Adventures Inc. and led groups of American high school students on tours where he served as guide. Former participants told investigators Walz openly praised the regime. He purchased copies of Mao’s Little Red Book and distributed them with the remark that “this is what we need to be doing.” One student recalled him saying, “Here’s what the Communist Party does great.” Several contacted the FBI when Walz later ran for office, citing his enthusiasm as evidence of divided loyalty.
Walz chose June 4, 1994, as his wedding date—the anniversary of the Tiananmen crackdown—and honeymooned in China that week. He told reporters he selected the date deliberately “to always remember.”

Classified Manuals Vanish During a China Trip

Walz served as sergeant major in the 125th Field Artillery Battalion. In 1994 his unit received the M109A5 howitzer, America’s most advanced nuclear-capable artillery system. The standard operating procedure manuals, stored in a secure officers-only area, contained detailed instructions for operation and maintenance. Fellow Guardsmen reported to the FBI that the manuals disappeared just before one of Walz’s China trips and reappeared after his return. One anonymous source told Alpha News, “We thought he was a spy.” The timing was unmistakable: documents gone when Walz departed, back when he returned.
China unveiled the PLZ-05 self-propelled howitzer soon afterward. Analysts noted its design closely mirrored the M109A5. U.S. intelligence assessments from the period state that 60 to 70 percent of Chinese outreach to Americans targeted weapons technology. No charges followed, but the incident cemented long-standing suspicions among Walz’s peers.
Taxpayer Dollars Flow to CCP-Linked Labs

As congressman and governor Walz secured millions for the Hormel Institute in Austin, Minnesota, including a $5 million earmark in 2010 and additional technology grants. Executive director Zigang Dong established the China-US Hormel Cancer Institute in Henan Province. Walz attended the announcement and later stated at a joint event: “Someday when they write the history of how humanity solved cancer, it will be written through Henan Province and through Austin, Minnesota.”
Dong resigned in 2019 after NIH and FBI investigations into his undisclosed participation in China’s Thousand Talents Program. The Hormel Institute had collaborated with the Wuhan Institute of Virology on COVID-19 protein studies and with the Beijing Genomics Institute, which the Pentagon classifies as a Chinese military company. Intelligence analyst Michael Sublick testified in 2026 Senate hearings that stolen research from such partnerships targeted radiation-resistant genetics for nuclear warfare, not medical cures. Walz never paused the funding or severed the partnerships.
Minnesota Turns Into Fraud Central

Walz’s administration oversaw the Feeding Our Future scandal, the largest documented COVID-era fraud case in the nation. Prosecutors charged 98 defendants for stealing at least $250 million in child nutrition funds through invented meal sites and money laundering. Internal Minnesota Department of Education memos flagged serious concerns in 2020. Walz’s team briefly paused reimbursements, then resumed them after a discrimination lawsuit. Walz claimed the FBI instructed him to continue payments. FBI officials testified in 2026 Oversight hearings that no such directive existed.
State auditors estimate total fraud across Minnesota’s welfare programs under Walz exceeds $9 billion. The Somali refugee community, resettled in large numbers since the 1990s and grown into a major Democratic voting bloc, became central to many operations. Walz’s administration received repeated whistleblower complaints yet took no decisive action until federal raids forced the issue. A December 2025 video from conservative influencer Nick Shirley showing suspicious day-care centers triggered additional enforcement.
King Ahaz believed he could use Assyria to solve immediate threats. Instead he handed his kingdom to permanent foreign control. Walz invited Chinese influence into military secrets, research labs, and financial oversight, then presided over unchecked fraud that drained billions from American taxpayers. The Bible records Ahaz’s choice as the moment Judah lost its independence. Minnesota’s governor has walked the same road. America cannot afford to let it continue.
